 Smile for the Camera!

Here at McKeevers Chemists we secretly do enjoy having the opportunity to get our photos taken! As we are actively involved with the charities in our local community, we were aware of the shortage of cameras and accessories for the Southern Area Hospice. We were happy to donate as the budget was unable to cover new cameras. The cameras are needed for hospice staff to take photos of their fantastic fundraising events and for their charity shop staff to photograph stock to advertise it for sale.

Our staff definitely had something to smile about as they presented Grainne Mulgrew (SAHS) with 5 state of the art digital cameras, memory cards and cases which will be used for events.

Diabetes Awareness Week Monaghan Street

June saw the return of Diabetes Awareness Week which ran from Sunday 11th June - Saturday 17th June. The theme for our campaign this year was 'Know Diabetes. Fight Diabetes'. While a lot of people have a good understanding of diabetes and how to manage it, many others aren’t getting the right help and support to look after their diabetes. At McKeevers Chemists, we take pride in being part of your local community and we encourage that all our customers and patients from the Diabetic community call into store to talk to our pharmacists about their medication.

This campaign was of paramount importance to us as we wanted our customers to share their experiences and knowledge of being a diabetic, and the effects of taking medication. We loved hearing our customers stories about diabetes as this shared knowledge could ultimately help someone else with the condition.

Every branch offers a Medicine Use Review and only takes 10 minutes of your time, Pharmacist Colm Quinn in our Thomas Street branch recommends, ‘…that people look after their health at a young age, eating their 5 a day, the correct portion sizes and always remember to try and exercise every day, even if it is only 20 minutes’

Watch out for McKeevers Chemists!

Love Your Heart This February

February is national heart month and with 1 in 9 people in Northern Ireland living with a heart condition the staff at McKeevers Chemists are urging everyone to take make minor changes to their daily life to help improve their health. Here are McKeevers Chemists top 5 tips to a healthy heart:

1.      Avail of free blood pressure checks in your local pharmacy, blood pressure is important because the higher your blood pressure is, the higher your risk of health problems in the future. If your blood pressure is high, it is putting extra strain on your arteries and on your heart, your pharmacist can give you advice on how to reduce high blood pressure.

2.       Stop smoking, if you're a smoker, quit! It's the single best thing you can do for your heart. Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. McKeevers Chemists offer a free 12 week quit smoking scheme in store for anyone who wants to quit. A year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.

3.       Getting and staying active can reduce your risk of developing heart disease. It can also be a great mood booster and stress buster. Do 150 minutes of moderate activity every week.

4.       Being overweight can increase your risk of heart disease. Stick to a healthy, balanced diet low in fat and sugar, with plenty of fruit and vegetables. There are lots of tasty ways to get your 5 a day, like adding chopped fruit to cereal or including vegetables in your pasta sauces and curries.

5.       Eating too many foods that are high in saturated fat can raise the level of cholesterol in your blood. This increases your risk of heart disease. Choose leaner cuts of meat and lower-fat dairy products like 1% fat milk over full-fat (or whole) milk.

Edel Haughian, pharmacist at McKeevers Chemists Marcus Square, Newry said: “As a community pharmacy we care about the health of our customers, all the McKeevers pharmacists are here to give free help and advice. I always urge my customers to avail of our blood pressure monitoring service, no appointment is necessary and it is completely free”.

If you want help or advice on how to improve your hearts health then speak to your local McKeevers Chemists pharmacist.   National-Heart-Health-Month---Marcus-Square-Team.jpg

McKeevers Chemists urge the public to start 2017 with a healthy lifestyle by joining their 12 week stop smoking scheme.

McKeevers Chemists 12 week stop smoking scheme is available to the public all year round which is funded by the NHS and is available to NI residents aged 16 plus.

Managing Director of McKeevers Chemists Paul McKeever stated, ‘we understand how hard it is to give up smoking, give up alcohol, or join the gym. Just take a moment and think to yourself... I can do this. Why not avail of the free help & support from our staff to help you become smoke free this year’. There are many alternative products to replace nicotine with. Facts show that 2,300 people in Northern Ireland die from smoking per year.

Edel Haughian pharmacist in McKeevers Chemist Marcus Square, Newry branch said ‘we are here to support our patients; everything will be private and confidential as always. I am urging people to think positively, think of the numerous health benefits, saving money, the list goes on...’

Taking Care of Your Biggest Organ at McKeevers Chemists

National Eczema Awareness Week takes place from 13th-21st September and McKeevers Chemists Monaghan Street Newry are urging people suffering from the condition to speak to their pharmacist or one of their trained skin care advisors for confidential advice.

Eczema is a condition that arises when allergens are easily absorbed into the skin, thus causing irritation. Sufferers will find that because their body isn’t making a sufficient amount of oils and fats they won’t be able to retain as much water and it is water which acts as a useful barrier against allergens and bacteria. Unfortunately the impact eczema has on an individual and their family is not always fully realised, during flare ups eczema can cause severe discomfort and even sleepless nights. The impact eczema can have on children and young adults can be very distressing for both them and their loved ones.

McKeevers Chemists pharmacist Laura Cunningham said “eczema is a very common skin problem we see here in the chemist on a daily basis so all our staff are fully trained in all aspects of the skin condition and the best products to treat it. Most commonly we recommend La Roche Posays Lipikar range because it is made specifically for those with severe dry skin complaints such as eczema and we have seen customers use it and get fantastic results from it, La Roche Posay is only available in selected pharmacies so we are urging anyone with eczema to call in store to talk to us confidentially so we can recommend the best course of treatment”.

For more information on over the counter products suitable for eczema talk to your local McKeevers Chemists pharmacist.
