Diabetes Awareness Week Monaghan Street

19105767_1691514800888776_9169387693191320742_n.jpg

June saw the return of Diabetes Awareness Week which ran from Sunday 11th June - Saturday 17th June. The theme for our campaign this year was 'Know Diabetes. Fight Diabetes'. While a lot of people have a good understanding of diabetes and how to manage it, many others aren’t getting the right help and support to look after their diabetes. At McKeevers Chemists, we take pride in being part of your local community and we encourage that all our customers and patients from the Diabetic community call into store to talk to our pharmacists about their medication.

This campaign was of paramount importance to us as we wanted our customers to share their experiences and knowledge of being a diabetic, and the effects of taking medication. We loved hearing our customers stories about diabetes as this shared knowledge could ultimately help someone else with the condition.

Every branch offers a Medicine Use Review and only takes 10 minutes of your time, Pharmacist Colm Quinn in our Thomas Street branch recommends, ‘…that people look after their health at a young age, eating their 5 a day, the correct portion sizes and always remember to try and exercise every day, even if it is only 20 minutes’

Watch out for McKeevers Chemists!

Love Your Heart This February

February is national heart month and with 1 in 9 people in Northern Ireland living with a heart condition the staff at McKeevers Chemists are urging everyone to take make minor changes to their daily life to help improve their health. Here are McKeevers Chemists top 5 tips to a healthy heart:

1.      Avail of free blood pressure checks in your local pharmacy, blood pressure is important because the higher your blood pressure is, the higher your risk of health problems in the future. If your blood pressure is high, it is putting extra strain on your arteries and on your heart, your pharmacist can give you advice on how to reduce high blood pressure.

2.       Stop smoking, if you're a smoker, quit! It's the single best thing you can do for your heart. Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. McKeevers Chemists offer a free 12 week quit smoking scheme in store for anyone who wants to quit. A year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.

3.       Getting and staying active can reduce your risk of developing heart disease. It can also be a great mood booster and stress buster. Do 150 minutes of moderate activity every week.

4.       Being overweight can increase your risk of heart disease. Stick to a healthy, balanced diet low in fat and sugar, with plenty of fruit and vegetables. There are lots of tasty ways to get your 5 a day, like adding chopped fruit to cereal or including vegetables in your pasta sauces and curries.

5.       Eating too many foods that are high in saturated fat can raise the level of cholesterol in your blood. This increases your risk of heart disease. Choose leaner cuts of meat and lower-fat dairy products like 1% fat milk over full-fat (or whole) milk.

Edel Haughian, pharmacist at McKeevers Chemists Marcus Square, Newry said: “As a community pharmacy we care about the health of our customers, all the McKeevers pharmacists are here to give free help and advice. I always urge my customers to avail of our blood pressure monitoring service, no appointment is necessary and it is completely free”.

If you want help or advice on how to improve your hearts health then speak to your local McKeevers Chemists pharmacist.   National-Heart-Health-Month---Marcus-Square-Team.jpg

Taking Care of Your Biggest Organ at McKeevers Chemists

National Eczema Awareness Week takes place from 13th-21st September and McKeevers Chemists Monaghan Street Newry are urging people suffering from the condition to speak to their pharmacist or one of their trained skin care advisors for confidential advice.

Eczema is a condition that arises when allergens are easily absorbed into the skin, thus causing irritation. Sufferers will find that because their body isn’t making a sufficient amount of oils and fats they won’t be able to retain as much water and it is water which acts as a useful barrier against allergens and bacteria. Unfortunately the impact eczema has on an individual and their family is not always fully realised, during flare ups eczema can cause severe discomfort and even sleepless nights. The impact eczema can have on children and young adults can be very distressing for both them and their loved ones.

McKeevers Chemists pharmacist Laura Cunningham said “eczema is a very common skin problem we see here in the chemist on a daily basis so all our staff are fully trained in all aspects of the skin condition and the best products to treat it. Most commonly we recommend La Roche Posays Lipikar range because it is made specifically for those with severe dry skin complaints such as eczema and we have seen customers use it and get fantastic results from it, La Roche Posay is only available in selected pharmacies so we are urging anyone with eczema to call in store to talk to us confidentially so we can recommend the best course of treatment”.

For more information on over the counter products suitable for eczema talk to your local McKeevers Chemists pharmacist.

McKeevers Chemists Urge People to be Sun Smart this Summer!

When the sun arrives we want to make the most of its short and sweet stay however, the sun is a visitor we need to take precautions with. It is sun awareness week from Monday 9th to Sunday 15th of May and here at McKeevers Chemists we are urging people to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from the dangers of sun exposure and to be sun smart.

The sun radiates ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage cells, these cells are then at risk of becoming cancerous. The dangerous thing is, you cannot feel UV rays damaging your skin and it happens even when the sun doesn’t feel hot. Getting sunburnt causes the top layers of skin to release chemicals that make blood vessels swell and leak fluids. The skin turns red and feels hot and painful, and severe sunburn can lead to swelling and blisters. After you have been sun burnt, the skin peels to get rid of damaged cells. It will eventually heal and look healthy, but permanent damage may have been done.

Sunburn doesn’t just happen when you’re on holiday, people who spend a lot of time in the sun, whether it’s for work or play, are at risk of skin cancer if they don’t take the right precautions.

The staff at McKeevers Chemists have been trained in the wide range of sun care products available and the precautions to take whilst enjoying the sun. We recommend that the skin is protected with clothing and always wear a hat that protects your face, neck and ears. Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm when it’s sunny.  When choosing a sunscreen look for a high protection SPF such as, SPF 30 or more to protect against harmful UVA and always use SPF 50 for children. If in doubt ask a member of the McKeevers Chemists team for advice.  Apply plenty of sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two hours, most people use too little resulting in 50-80% less protection than specified on the bottle.  Be sure to reapply sunscreen after swimming and towel-drying.  Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight.

Talk to staff in your local McKeevers Chemists branch for more sun smart tips or to avail of the wide selection of sun creams available at competitive prices.

 Thierry Mugler Secret Event.... Sshhh

We hosted our first ever invite only Thierry Mugler event on Wednesday night, the secret event was to allow our top perfume customers to get to know perfumes as more than just a pretty smell. Thierry Mugler Fragrance Expert, Catriona Rafferty attended the event to talk us through everything we need to know about perfume!

Firstly the ladies were blind folded and given food to represent each Angel fragrance note so they could break the scent down into each note rather than just one overall smell. Then it was time to do a blind smelling test to guess which of the Thierry Mugler scents they were sniffing and finally each of the ladies were given a deluxe goody bag to go home with.

Susan Turns 60 and Celebrates 47 Years in Pharmacy!

Yesterday we celebrated Susans 60th Birthday in Rostrevor with a little surprise party for her in the shop.
Susan has worked in Rostrevor Pharmacy long before McKeevers Chemists ever existed, she started as a part time sales assistant when she was only 13 to get a bit of extra money while at school. Who would have thought 47 years later she would still be working in the shop on her 60th birthday! When asked what was the highlight of her 47 years in the shop she replied "Everyday, I have always enjoyed my work and I am happy to come here everyday".
Susan truely is the heart of the Rostrevor community and we can not thank her enough for all her years of hard work and dedication.

Happy Birthday Susan and we hope you enjoyed the party, from all the staff at McKeevers xx

McKeevers has the right medicine for success following expansion across the UK

We are currently celebrating success following further expansion into GB having bought two new stores in Liverpool and adding a further pharmacy in Belfast.

With support from First Trust Bank, we bought our first GB store last September in Greasby, Liverpool, as part of plans to expand business into the UK. This addition of two new stores in Wallasey, Liverpool and one on Springfield Road, Belfast now brings us to a total of 15 pharmacies employing 180 staff, including 32 pharmacists.

Our strong growth has also led to the opening of a new warehouse in Armagh to facilitate order demand and distribution across its network of pharmacies.  In total, these recent expansions have brought 49 new employees to the McKeevers group and created 12 brand new jobs including positions in warehouse and delivery, sales, marketing and management.  Recognising the need for accessible and professional care, We put our success down to supporting local communities with health monitoring services,  prescription collection and delivery, as well as  offering the ‘best prices in town’ through price comparison checks.

Speaking about the recent growth, Paul McKeever, Managing Director, McKeever Chemists said;

“We strive to be at the heart of health care in the local communities we serve and with the help of First Trust Bank I am delighted to be able to extend our services to more communities throughout the UK. The Bank has supported me from when I acquired my first pharmacy in 2001 and they have been with me every step of the way - offering industry insight and the necessary flexibility - in an ever changing business environment.  I believe it is important to have a strong relationship with your bank, and with First Trust I certainly feel we have the right ‘chemistry.’ ”

Welcoming this news of further expansion, Meabh Officer, Relationship Manager, First Trust Bank said;

“The Bank has worked with Paul and his team for almost 15 years, and we are continually impressed with their commitment to local communities in the provision of local healthcare.  Not only is this latest expansion a great business success story for the company, it is also a success story for the local communities in which they serve.  Initiatives such as prescription collection and delivery, price comparison, blood pressure monitoring and diabetes screening in local clubs and schools as well as various local sports sponsorships, makes McKeevers vision of being at the heart of healthcare in the community a reality. Their commitment to their staff and the local areas in which they operate is to be congratulated and we look forward to supporting them further in the future.”
